Another Project Completed!

on .

I was recently asked to add products from Amazon to a new Amazon Associate website that was built using Wordpress.

It took a while as the way it was worked meant that it took an average of almost one hour to add 10 products but 400+ products later and the work is done.

Wordpress Here I Come!

on .

I've done some work for clients on Wordpress in the past, but I've never really looked at it from scratch and so I thought it would be about time that I did.

This website is hosted by my friend/client Phoenix Web Dev but for my Wordpress project I needed full CPanel access and signed up to Hostzilla which offer Free Cloud Hosting providing 100mb of space, unlimited traffic, unlimited sub-domains and much more.

When I installed WP I thought that I may as well make a niche website. I decided to keep the default Twenty Ten template and make my own changes. Now, I'm also pretty new to CSS and at times I thought I was possibly punching above my weight, but their support forums as well as quick Google searches proved invaluable.

To try and make a small amount of money through the site, I signed up to Google Adsense to get some adverts on the site and Amazon Associates so that I could have store built in to the site.
To keep the site up to date with the latest information, I decide to cheat and embed RSS feeds into the site using a great free plugin called WP Rss poster. I've not provided a link as for some reason they don't seem to have it on their website.

I still need to make adjustments until I'm a bit more satisfied with the site but a problem I have now is that when I try to change some CSS it's not saving.
It turns out that I should make a 'child' of the template before making changes on this particular theme. Unfortunately, I don't really have the time to do that right now!

Other adjustments I need to make is to make sure the domain name doesn't change to my sub-domain name when users go to the site and the big thing to do is sort out SEO.
I'm not big in the knowledge of SEO but luckily, this is just an experiment anyway.

Make Some Money

on .

This article is hopefully going to show you, in 4 steps, how to make a few quid.
You won't make a fortune, you may not even reach three figures, but anything is better than nothing, right?

1)  Ditch Ebay!

'Has he gone crazy?' I hear you ask. Yes I have, but that is besides the point.
Ebay costs you money. You pay to list an item (unless you take advantage of the many 'No Listing Fee' days).
On top of that, you also have Paypal fees.

2) Sell on Facebook

Everyone knows what Facebook is. Not everyone is on it.
However, selling your items on Facebook is free. Just search for 'For Sale in (my area) and there are many groups.
You don't pay to list, you don't pay when you have sold.
You can meet up with the person buying your item and if they then decide they don't like it then there is no problem.
If you are not on Facebook, you could always set up an account and just use it for selling items.
If you still don't want to be on Facebook, there are plenty of other places to sell such as Gumtree.

3) Take Payment Via Paypal

Yes, Paypal costs you money to receive money, but not if you take Paypal Gift payments.
So, if you sell on a Facebook group (or other excluding Ebay) and you really want money in advance, then ask for a gift payment. No fees involved.
I do believe, however, that by taking Gift payments you are not covered by the Paypal's payment protection.

4) Use Your Skills

Do you have a skill? Sign up to Fiverr. Basically, you offer a service for $5. This could be just about anything from writing an article to singing happy birthday to a stranger down the phone.
There are also great websites you can use to bid for work. Can you write articles? Do you know how to add products to websites? Any good at Data Entry in Excel? How about making a brochure in Word?
Have a look at People Per Hour for more details.

There are many more similar websites to those that I've covered but I have suggested these ones because of past experience.

Want To Lose All Your Data?

on .

What would you do if you had a major hard drive crash on your computer?

Do you have another copy of all those treasured family photographs, music and important work documents?

It actually happened to myself once. One day, my computer decided that it didn't want to power up. I had everything backed-up on one external hard drive. The unimaginable happened and that hard drive failed at the same time!
Both hard drives went to the doctors, but it was too late to save them.

Since that day, I have always had everything backed up 'offsite'.
All the family data is on a NAS (Network Attached Storage), which copies itself to a second drive.
But what if the unimaginable happened again and both drives failed at the same time - which can and will happen at some point.
Or what if the NAS gets stolen or just simply damaged from being moved or by a power surge?

I've tried many different companies for offsite backup, and it's a case of paying for what you get. My advice is don't go for the cheapest as they aren't always the best.

I am now with a company called SpiderOak. You can sign up for free to get a fantastic 2gb lifetime storage. However, enter the promotional code 'worldbackupday' or 'reddit' and your free storage will be more than doubled to a whopping 5gb which is plenty of space for most people to keep all those photos and documents safe.

If you want more space, than there is a very easy pricing structure. For up to 100gb, you pay just $10 per month (£6.42 at time of writing) and then $10 for every other 100gb, but if you enter promo code 'reddit' you will pay just $8 per month (£5.14) for every 100gb.

Alternatively, you can pay $100 per year (£64.26).
But, they also have promotional codes for this too. Enter the code 'Spring' to recieve 25% off their annual service, paying just $75 for 100gb of space.

So, how does it work?
You download the SpiderOak client onto as many computers as you wish, choose which files you want backed-up, and leave it to work for itself. The company is also one of a handful that also offer NAS/Mapped Drive/External Hard Drive backup which is rather surprising considering how many people now have a NAS/Mapped Drives and/or External Hard Drives on their computers.

You can find all the features, including how to share your data with others, on the SpiderOak website.

Can you put a price on all your important and irreplaceable data?

It was too late for me, don't let it be too late for you.
